The Thai Government has implemented the construction of Suvarnabhumi Airport with the goals of being the gateway in traveling to Thailand and also the regional aviation hub with the service capability equivalent to the world’s leading international airports and the Airport has been opened for services since 28 September 2006.
In support of these goals, the Government considered to provide a fast rail linking between the business area of Bangkok and Suvarnabhumi Airport in a distance of about 28 kilometres with convenient, punctual, fast, and reliable services.
On 28 July 2003, the meeting of Suvarnabhumi Airport Development Committee presided over by the Prime Minister decided that the State Railway of Thailand should manage Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link and City Air Terminal Project (Phaya Thai-Makkasan-Suvarnabhumi) and later on 1 July 2004 the Cabinet Committee approved the decision.
International tendering was carried out and won by the Consortium consisting of B. Grimm International Ltd., B. Grimm MBM Hong Kong Ltd., Siemens Ltd. Thailand, Siemens Aktiengesellschaft Ltd., Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction Plc., and the Construction Contract was signed on 20 January 2005.
