Suvarnabhum Airport had a meeting with Samuthprakarn province, Lardkrabang district, Chief Executive of Sub-district Administrative Organization (SAO) and the community leaders around the airport areas forpreparing a plan to cope with the water volume flowing from the east side of Bangkok thru the Lardkrabang Sub-district and Samuthprakarn province.
Mr. Somchai Sawasdeepon, Vice President of Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT), and acting director of Suvarnabhumi Airport, said that today (14. Nov. 11) he has invited the representatives of Samuthprakarn province, Lardkrabang Sub-district, Chief Executive of SAO and community leaders around airport areas totaling 85 communities to attend the meeting for the explanation about the flood prevention system of Suvarnabhumi Airport, consisting of 3.5 m. high dyke, constructed since 1995 and completed in 1999. Such system does not have any impact on the communities as well as the system is very well capable to accommodate the water within the Suvarnabhumi Airport up to 4 million cubic meters without pumping out.
Mr. Somchai added that besides the construction of the mentioned flood prevention system Suvarnabhumi Airport had also dredged Klong Nong-Nguhau, which is the canal parallel to the airport on the east side and Klong Lardkrabang, which is parallel to the airport on the west side, 35-40 meters wider than the original width. The canals on the north side and south side of the airport have also been dredged and both canals have been linked to each other for accommodating and draining the water from Lardkrabang district.
Additionally said Mr. Somchai that since early October Suvarnabhumi Airport was thoroughly monitoring the water situation and the water started to access the Lardkrabang area. Consequently it cooperated with the King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology (KMIT) to explore the canals around the airport and found that many canals on the south side of the airport, such as Klong Lardkrabang, Klong Bangchalong, etc., are shallow and obstructed. Therefore, over 200 security and firefighting staff is mobilized together with high pressure fire engine and equipment for dredging the obstructions such as water hyacinth, scrap of stones and splinters. Particularly, the use of water from the fire engine for injecting the mud under the water in the zone under the Bangna-Tras Road bridge. This task force commenced since November 11, 2011.
Mr. Somchai said that after Suvarnabhumi Airport had finished the canal dredging, it has surveyed the amount of water at the pumping station on the seaside of the Royal Irrigation Department and found that the amount of water pumped out by the Royal Irrigation Department was more than originally 7 hundred thousand up to 1 million cubic meters a day.
Mr. Somchai added that in the meeting today the attendances had given precedence to the working together in monitoring the water situation in this area and jointly mobilizing the forces both staff, machines and equipment available to prepare for coping with the soon coming water as well as to help determine the long-term solution by appointing a working committee. It is a good opportunity that Suvarnabhumi Airport and community leaders will concretely work together for the social around the airport.
