| Suvarnabhumi Airport confirmed, the west runway works already normally. |

Suvarnabhumi Airport confirmed that the west runway is now working normally after it has been temporarily closed for repairing last night of the 5th July 2012.
Mr. Somchai Sawasdeepon, Director of Suvarnabhumi Airport, Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) disclosed that during the time from 20.30 -21.20 pm. on last July 5, 2012 Suvarnabhumi Airport has temporarily closed the west runway for repairing for 50 minutes. During the said repair it resulted in some flight to divert to other reserved airports namely Don Muaeng Airport, U-Tapao Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport totaling 11 flights. However, the Suvarnabhumi Airport’s runway can now normally serve in accordance with the safety standard.
Mr. Somchai said that the reason for temporarily closing the west runway was because of the staff has inspected and found out that the surface was disintegrated partially at the beginning of the runway 19R westerly and the staff has repaired by paving the damaged surface area with asphalt. The repair took about 50 minutes. The cause of the damage was supposed that the cause of the damage was by continually under heavy utilization and due to it has to accommodate additionally more flights because of the partially closing of north runway for improvement and including it is the rainy season.
Mr. Somchai added that in conduction the repair of the west runway this time it was for the safety in serving the flights and passengers. Normally Suvarnabhumi Airport has the responsibility for the inspection of the runways and taxiways two times a day to maintain the continuous safety serviceability. If it is found out that the surface is damaged, Suvarnabhumi Airport will then conduct the immediate repair. Suvarnabhumi Airport is prepared in staff and materials as well as machinery and equipment around at the west side fire station around the clock being able to conduct the repairing work, in case of an emergency, and open for normal service within a short time.
Mr. Somchai said that regarding the progress of the improvement of the east runway on the north side it is now overall 42% and under the process of surface layer construction. It is expected that the improvement shall be completed on August 2, 2012, which is about 1 week earlier than scheduled.
By the way, diverting flights to other reserved airports during the closing for the repair of the said runway were 11 flights as follows:

6. Thai Airways, Flight No. TG 585 from Phnom Pehn to U-Tapao Airport
7. Thai Airway, Flight No. 466 from Melbourne to Don Muaeng Airport
8. Thai Airway, Flight No. TG 258 from Surat Thani to Don Muaeng Airport
9. Thai Airways,Flight No. TG 677 from Narita to Chiang Mai International Airport
