| Suvarnabhumi Airport to improve the east runway partially |

Suvarnabhumi Airport will repair the east runway on the north sidewith the distance of 1,620 meters. During the repair the service is still going on regularly.
Flying Officer Anirut Thanomkulbutra, President of Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) said that in coming September Suvarnabhumi Airport will complete its 6 year service and its runway has been used heavily. It serves more than 1,500,000 flights. Even if Suvarnabhumi Airport takes part in their care, improving the runway, taxiway and car park on the regular basis, but from the heavy service for quite a long time, the partial surface of the runway is disintegrated and needs the major improvement for the fully efficient service being capable to accommodate the continuously flight increase.
Flying Officer Anirut added that the improvement of the east runway this time is the particular repair of the runway surface on the north side with a distance of 1,620 metersonly. The repair will take place from 11th June – 9th August 2012 and the said operation will partially affect some parts of Suvarnabhumi Airport. The co-ordination with various related shutdowns such as the Department of Civil Aviation, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co., Ltd. and airlineshas then been taken place since the beginning of last year, in order to be informed of the improvement plan as well as the preparation for supporting the passenger service and flights during the said improvement.
Mr. Somchai Sawasdeepon, Director of Suvarnabhumi Airport, additionally said that the improvement of the north runway (Runway 19L) this time from the beginning of the runway to the area of the connecting Taxiway B6. The total distance is about 1,620 meters. The procedure of the improvement will be proceeded with the asphaltic concrete overlay of 10 cm. thickness and divided by 2 operational phases, namely:-
- Phase 1: To close some areas of the east runway on the north side
sidefrom connecting taxiway B6 to the beginning of the runway at the connection taxiway B1 with the distance of 1,620 meters for the improvement of the surface of the runway B6 – B3 with the distance of 870 meters initially. This will take about 40 days. After the completion the said area will be reopened for service. However, after the shutdown of 1,620 meters runway area, there will be more than 2,000 meter runway area usable. Since the east runway has a length of 4,000 meters capable for small aircraft up to A320 to fly up normally.
- Phase 2: To complete the remaining area of 750 meters at the boundary of connecting taxiway B3
in the beginning area of the runwaywithin 20 days. There will be additionally usable runway area more than 3,000 meters, so that every type of aircraft (except A380) can fly up normally. It is expected that all improvements will be complete within 60 days as specified.
Mr. Somchai added that during the period of closing down the north side of the east runway area for the improvement, the west runway of Suvarnabhumi Airport is still serving the flights regularly and before shutdown for repairing the east runway, Suvarnabhumi Airport has prepared the west runway to be able to fully support efficiently, such as the repair of the runway surface, electrical system, painting the signs on the runway for clearness, cleaning the runway as well as dredging canals for drainage. All of those works mentioned above are completed.
Mr. Somchai said additionally that Suvarnabhumi Airport has held a meeting with the concerning agencies, including the Department of Civil Aviation, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co., Ltd., Airport Operation Committee (AOC), airline representatives, Thai Immigration Bureau, customs departmentto clarify the details of the operation plans in advance. All of them have rendered their cooperation very well in preparing their operation plan in accordance with the east runway improvement plan as well they also have prepared an emergency plan for various situations such as emergency plan for accident on the runway, plan for moving accident aircrafts, plan for providing facilities for left over passengers. Co-ordination with Don Mueang Airport and other airports under the responsibility of AOT such as Chiang Mai International Airport, Phuket International Airport as well as U-Tapao Airport, has also been arranged and prepared for being as supporting airport in emergency case for moving the arrival flights from Suvarnabhumi Airport to these airports.
Squadron Leader Prajak Sajjasophon, President of Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co., Ltd., said that as Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co., Ltd., is an agency providing air traffic of Thailand and responsible for air traffic services at Suvarnabhumi Airport, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Co., Ltd. is prepared for covering the situation during the improvement of the east runway on the north side of Suvarnabhumi Airport.
As a guideline of the management of AROTHAI, who is taking care of the air traffic control, the Air Traffic Flow management will be applied in allocating the number of flight in each period of time suitable to the capacity of Suvarnabhumi Airport and AROTHAI has also closely coordinated with related agencies both in Thailand and foreign countries as well as informed them of the contingent situation in advance and asked them for the cooperation in adjusting the flying time and number of flight in order to decrease the accumulation of the aircraft as well as reducing the risk of flying for landing in the reserved airports. Moreover, an advance technology is applied to arrange the departure and landing of aircrafts. Staff Training on air traffic control by using various technologies and technical instruments as well as the procedures and practices during the improvement of the runway has also been conducted, in order that the work is being done in the same direction. Additional air traffic controlling staff has also been provided during the traffic congestion.
However, the AROTHAI will carry out the full air traffic management, in order to enhance the efficiency of the flight operations and assist in administrate the delay problem, while maintaining the importance of the maximum safety, comfort of the passenger’s journey and economic impact of the country.
Ms. Marisa Pongpattanapun, chairwoman of the Airport Operation Committee or AOC said that Suvarnabhumi Airport has closely coordinated since last year with AOC concerning the improvement on the north side of the east runway of Suvarnabhumi Airport. Several joint meetings have been held for the plan adjustment in accordance with and suitable to the period of time, in order to minimize the impact on services. Airlines are now receiving information about the operating time obviously and each airline has adjusted the operating plan and is preparing for the case of delayed flight.
The partial improvement on the north side of east runway, Suvarnabhumi Airport has employed Thai Slurry Seal Co., Ltd. to carry out this work in an amount of 138.22 million Baht and the work shall commence from 9th March 2012. The first 45 days from 9th March -22nd April 2012 is the initial phase for advance preparation and the improvement work for 60 days will be commencing from 11th June to 9th August 2012.
