AOT pushed forward the Suvarnabhumi Airport Expansion Project (Phase II) with a budget of over 62.5 billion Baht

     Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited or OAT pushed forward to accelerate the Suvarnabhumi Expansion Project (Fiscal Year 2011 – 2017) or Phase II by employing the EPM Consortium, consulting company group, to manage the project with the budget of over 800 million Baht.

     Flying Officer Anirut Thanomkulbutra, President of Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited disclosed to the mass media after the ceremony of contract signing to employ the EPM Consortium as the project manager of the Suvarnabhumi Airport Expansion Project (Fiscal year 2011 – 2017) or Phase IIthat the design and construction of Suvarnabhumi Airport was for accommodating 45 million passengers annually, but after the airport had been put into operation at the end of 2006 the number of the passenger using the service of Suvarnabhumi Airport is continuously increasing, so that last year it increased to 48 million passengers per year. It is expected that this year the number of the passenger will be reaching 51 million persons per year and is likely to rise more and more in the future. Therefore, it is necessary to expedite the Suvarnabhumi Airport Expansion Project Phase II, in order to enhance the capacity. This project will be completed in 2017 and is additionally capable to accommodate 15 million passengers annually. Altogether Suvarnabhumi Airport will have the capacity in accommodating totally 60 million passengers annually.

     Flying Officer Anirut said that the Suvarnabhumi Airport Expansion Project Phase II consists of 4 main work groups namely the first work group is the construction of the sub-concourse building with the utilizing area of 216,000 m2, 28 aircraft parking bays closed to the building, aircraft parking yard with total area of 960,000 m2 and the construction of the tunnel extension on the south side as well as the passenger transportation system. The second work group is the construction of the extension of the existing passenger terminal at the east side, and the construction of an airline office building and parking yard. The third work group is the design and construction group of public utilities. The forth work group is the employment of the project management consultants. The total budget for this expansion project is over 62.5 billion Baht.

     Flying Officer Anirut added that the employment of EPM Consortium Co., Ltd. as consultant to act as the project management such as preparing the specifications, hiring the design consultant for controlling the designing work, the construction work. The consultants will start working on June 1, 2012. The total duration is 70 months.

     Dr. Sakchai Phadungtham, Executive President of EPM Consortium International Co., Ltd, as the leading company of the EPM Consortium Group, revealed that EPM Consortium Group as the conglomeration of consultant companies in large project management, comprising of PCBK International Co., Ltd., Chote Chinda Muchel Consultant Co., Ltd. Epsilon Company Limited and Oriental Consultants Company Limited., is very delighted to have won the trust being selected as the project management company of the Suvarnabhumi Airport Expansion Project Phase II (Fiscal Year 2011 – 2017)with the contract duration from 2012-2018, budget of 809.9 million Baht. The mentioned project will be completed within 70 months or 6 years. The function of the Project Management Company (PCM) is to supervise every step from the design to the construction as well as the selection of the standard and most efficient contractors.

     Dr. Sakchai added that the official project operating plan after signing the contract is that the first session is to study and prepare the models for determining the scope of work as well as the specification of designing following by a tender for the designers, contractors. The construction is expected to start in the middle of 2015 and ready for service in 2017. The group of EPM Consortium will pay the full effort and capability. Finally said Dr. Chaisak that with years of experience in international mega projects, especially the first phase of the construction of Suvarnabhumi Airport, which we have done, we are confident that we will be able to work successfully and certainly complete the project within 2017.
